Sorauren Farmers Market

Toronto - August 31, 2021 - Something I have learned through the Harvest Hunters explorations thus far is that you can find a farmers market any day of the week. However, of all days, Mondays offer the least options. I’m not sure why exactly this is, but I am happy that it gave me the opportunity to explore a wonderful Toronto market - Sorauren Farmers Market.

Located in Roncesvalle in the beautiful Sorauren Park, the farmers market is situated amidst a gorgeous residential area filled with old Toronto homes and new low-rise condo buildings. The area is so close to where I live, yet the aesthetic and feeling of the community felt so unfamiliar. Very, community-like. I turned onto Wabash Avenue, where the entrance of the market lay, where cars were lining the street and making their own parking spots. I assumed these cars belonged to the market shoppers, and I definitely was right.

The entrance to the market is hidden between park trees. As I walked towards the park and through the entrance, I was absolutely delighted by the sight of numerous vendors set up in a perfect flow around the park. I was also delighted to be surrounded by Monday afternoon shoppers (so I was right about the cars). You can tell each of the shoppers knew exactly what they wanted and what they were doing - so I don’t think this is a one time spot for many of them and serves as more of their weekly grocery haul. Vendors at the market include farms, bakeries, flower growers, other food producers, and even chocolate makers! I guess the glowing sun that afternoon rubbed off on everyone because each vendor I spoke to was so kind and happy. I couldn’t say no to the chocolate maker after chatting with their representative, and took home two bars as well as samples he was gracious enough to give me.

Sorauren Farmers’ Market is a non profit organization and a welcoming hub providing wholesome fresh food and community connection since 2008. Part of their goal is to generate relationships and dialogue around gardening, sustainable farming and healthy food and implementing measures to lessen the market’s environmental impact. The market runs on Mondays from 3:00pm to 7:00pm.
