Kawartha Country Wines
Buckhorn, Ontario

Vaughan - March 19th, 2022 - Following my last blog, I would like to finish my story outlining the great finds found during my girl’s trip to Buckhorn, Ontario. After wrapping up our visit to Leahy’s Farm & Market, my girlfriends and I traveled south towards Buckhorn, but weren’t quite ready to head to the cottage just yet. We still had ‘wine’ as an outstanding item on our shopping list. Using my iPhone's map, I searched the nearby area for ‘wine shops’. Though LCBO popped up, I was delighted that a few unknown names/addresses appeared. The one that caught my eye was Kawartha Country Wines. I clicked on the location profile and clicked ‘go’ without a second thought, and drove my friends this next destination.
We drove on Peterborough Country Road 86 surrounded by green fields on either side and the sun above us, then turned into the driveway of Kawartha Country Wines. The property itself was very fitting for cottage country. After parking the car, we tried to get into the building on the right hand side which we soon learned was where the wine is made, not served. So we walked towards the second building, up the wooden steps, through the front door. The tasting room and shop are housed in an 1866 authentic pioneer log cabin and 1889 board and batton house, complete with the original square hewn logs and pine floors. The two buildings were moved to their current location and lovingly restored to create an incredible cottage country destination in the Kawarthas.
The Kawartha Country Wines shop is lined with shelves of wines and ciders, sauces, pepper jellies, preserves and more. My friends and I looked at each shelf from top to bottom and were completely overwhelmed by the selection of wines and ciders before us. Noticing our bewilderment (but also excitement), one of the staff members approached us to walk us through the selection. He then recommended we do a tasting which we of course could not turn down. We made our way onto the back patio which was busy with other customers trying the wines as well! We tried about 6 different wines, one more delicious than the other. I couldn’t get over the fact that wines were made from such varieties of fruit. I mean, we all know wine is made from grapes… but to hear about other fruits that were used (which by the way were either grown on site or sourced locally) was so different! We loved the wines so much that we bought all 6 bottles to bring back to the cottage to enjoy.
